Historic image of the first Fisk Chapel (A.M.E. Bethel), built in 1858 by the African Methodist Episcopal congregation in Fair Haven, New Jersey. A sign reading “A.M.E. Bethel, Fair Haven” appears above the entrance. The image was published in The Daily Register (Red Bank–Middletown, N.J.) on June 14, 1974 (p. 18) in reference to the church’s history. Fisk Chapel later became a central site for African American religious, civic, and community life in Fair Haven, including Emancipation Day celebrations and church-led initiatives.
