Hayward Riley Portrait

Studio portrait of Hayward Riley, a Sunday school teacher at Fisk Chapel Church in Fair Haven, New Jersey, in the late 1920s. According to the accompanying identification label, Riley was also the first scout master in Fair Haven for African American boys. The troop held meetings at Fisk Chapel. The label further notes that Mrs. Fox purchased the first Boy Scout uniforms for the troop. This photograph documents early African American leadership in church education and youth development in Fair Haven.

Clinton B. Fisk (1828–1890) Union Army brigadier general; later businessman, prohibitionist, and educator. Fisk later provided land and funds for the original construction of Fisk Chapel in Fair Haven. George Holloway (d. December 22, 1910) Commissioned First Lieutenant, 33rd Missouri Infantry, August 7, 1862 (Regimental Adjutant). Detached December 22, 1862 as Acting Assistant Adjutant General of Volunteers to General Clinton B. Fisk.
