Handwritten Document (Verbatim Transcription) Edmond Throckmorton To his slave Anthony Quero Know all men by these presents that I Edmond Throckmorton of the township of Shrewsbury in the county of Monmouth and state of New Jersey do hereby manumit and set free my slave named Anthony Quero aged twenty eight years on the fourth of February next, And the said Anthony Quero is hereby set free and at full liberty to go and come where he pleases and by himself to do and perform all acts and things that any free man has a right to do and is hereby exonerated and discharged from all claims of servitude or ever have had to the service and labour of the said Anthony Quero In Witness Whereof I have to these presents set my hand and seal this seventh day of January 1832 Signed sealed delivered in the presence of Edmond Throckmorton Anthony Quero, manumitted. (A handwritten legal document in which Edmond Throckmorton of Shrewsbury, Monmouth County, New Jersey, formally manumits Anthony Quero. The document states that Quero, aged twenty-eight years, is set free and granted full liberty to act as any free man. The document is signed, sealed, and dated January 7, 1832, with a printed caption below reading “Anthony Quero, manumitted.”)

Typed Text (Verbatim Transcription) Manumission was the act of owners freeing slaves. Anthony Quero was born in 1804. In 1832, while living in Shrewsbury (part of which would later become the Borough of Fair Haven), was “manumitted” by owner Edmond Throckmorton in 1832 at the age of 28. “Anthony Quero aged twenty eight years on the fourth of February next…is hereby let free and at full liberty … to do and perform all acts and things that any free man has a right to do…” 07 January 1832 (A typed interpretive text explaining the concept of manumission and summarizing the emancipation of Anthony Quero. The text states that Quero, born in 1804, was manumitted in 1832 while living in Shrewsbury, an area that would later become part of the Borough of Fair Haven. An excerpt from the original manumission document is included, along with the date January 7, 1832.)
