June 1981
Dear Graduates:
You and I entered this year not knowing one another. As I have heard others speak of the unknown,
there are generally two ways to deal with it. One can view the unknown anxiously, or one can perceive
the unknown as an exciting challenge. It seems to me, we chose the second view and, in doing so, we
aided each other in meeting the challenges of the year.
What are some of the ingredients to this positive view of the unknown? For us, I have thought our
willingness to communicate; our development of mutual respect; our ability to maintain a sense of
humor were all important. Perhaps our most important ingredient was always attempting to trust each
other throughout the year.
Now that you have helped me in my initial year at Buckley, I hope you will use the above concepts to
aid yourselves in your new adventure this coming year. Thank you for all your enthusiasm and hard work.
My best wishes go with you as well as an open invitation to visit us at any time.
Sincerely,
Richard G. Broughton
